Home of the Brave, Land of the Free

Home of the brave, land of the free.  Freedom is a privilege that has been given to us, from our forefathers and ancestors, who fought for everything that we now have.  It was fought for, not given out of kindness or the goodness of their heart.  King George did not give us up without a solid fight.

It’s easy to forget this privilege; and it’s not your fault!  When something is not at the forefront of your mind it typically will be forgotten until needed.  The problem is, is that sometimes we will forget something important, such as freedom, and we won’t remember it until it’s too late.  That’s when you do that face smack emoji in real life.

What is one of the most commonly forgotten freedoms that we have been given? Ding, ding, ding, that’s correct, it’s driving.  We can all assume, with a good deal of certainty, that when vehicles were first invented, driving them was a pretty chaotic adventure.  As time went on, vehicles became more user friendly, and with that the laws around driving vehicles began to be nailed down and perfected for the safety of all.

Again, we can assume, with that high percentage of certainty, that before DUI laws came into effect, that chaotic adventure was actually pretty disastrous.  DUI laws are in place for a VERY good reason, as we all know.  It keeps you safe and it keeps all citizens, who have every freedom as you, safe.

So, let’s say you get a DUI, a piece of freedom has now been taken from you.  *Remember though, this is a FREEDOM.  With all freedom comes responsibility.  Don’t think of it as unfair, think of it as an opportunity to learn and to keep that freedom at the forefront of your mind during any future driving endeavors.* Your ability to drive has now been hindered.  Your license has been suspended and the only way to liberate yourself from the restricted access you are now dealing with, you must complete the following steps:

  1. alcohol screening/classes
  2. traffic survival school
  3. SR-22 Insurance
  4. Ignition Interlock Device

You have completed the first two, hooray! You are almost done! You can almost feel the wind blowing across your face as you image yourself driving down that road of sweet, delicious freedom. But don’t get too excited just yet, you still have the last, most important step to complete. The ignition interlock process is no laughing matter.  It not only should be taken seriously, but you should also make sure you are properly educated on the procedures and expectations.

First, you need have a properly working vehicle that you can drive around.  You will need insurance for that vehicle.  You should have completed all of this in step number three.  Having that SR-22 is vital so don’t slip up on that.

You will then need to find an interlock company to install the device into your vehicle.  You will be using this device every time you get into your vehicle to go somewhere.  You will need to blow into the device, not only to get your vehicle moving, but as your moving it will randomly prompt you to blow again – precautionary purposes, you understand.  Just another freedom of yours that has been suspended until further notice.

If you think about it, that freedom that you had before all of this seems to feel more and more special and perhaps it’s something that you shouldn’t lose again.  Just some food for thought as you begin to finish up this final step.

Once you have your interlock device in your vehicle, you will also be set up with monthly payments for that device.  Yup, you heard that correctly.  Mo money, mo money – making it rain all over the DUI process.  But don’t give up, you really are so close!

This will last for twelve months.  But don’t get too discouraged, it will be all over before you know it.  During these twelve months you will need to go twelve times, meaning one time each month, to the company you got the device from, to get your device calibrated.  What that means is they will take all of the information that your interlock has recorded for the month and it will be sent over to the DMV.

So, make sure you are A.) driving your vehicle frequently – it will make it look better if you have more data to give them, and B.) don’t mess up and blow into your device after drinking.  You do not want to have your interlock reject you, that is not good.  It will record it, it will keep it, it will be sent to the DMV and you can never take it back.  Make the right choice.  You already put yourself in this situation, you are so close to finishing, don’t make life more difficult than it has to be.

As long as you can play by the rules and walk that straight line for those twelve months, you will be tasting that long awaited freedom in real life.  The light at the end of that forever feeling tunnel can be seen and you are walking towards it with purpose and intention.

Just like any other step in this process, things can be confusing.  You want to make sure that you walk that fine line perfectly so you don’t have to spend any more time than necessary on this road.  There are resources that you can find googling.  But is that really the way you want to go?  Who knows what is honest online these days.
