Surviving Traffic Survival School

For some of you being fifteen may seem like forever ago.  Back before you couldn’t do anything!  The anticipation of finally turning 16 was life consuming.  At least when your 16 you can finally feel something like an adult.  Adults drive, so driving is the first step to freedom from childhood.  All you had to do is get a permit, drive with the parentals for a bit, then take the paper test, finally the driving test, then freedom.

But dang, that drivers test was terrifying wasn’t it.  You were legit in a car, being monitored and evaluated on every move you made, trying as hard as you could to do everything perfect so you could finally hold that shiny, plastic passport to the open road.  All the studying, practicing, stressing – this was the moment of truth.

Think about that stress, though.  It was exciting, yes, but it was for sure scary.  Take that feeling, multiply that stress and anxiety by ten, this is what you get when you get a DUI.  Now you have to go through all of these steps, all over again, to get your drivers license back.  You already did this and now it’s like your fifteen all over again.  Except this time there is so much more that you have to do in order to regain your freedom – go to alcohol screening/classes, traffic survival school, get SR-22 Insurance, and install an Ignition Interlock Device.

This makes getting your license the first time seem like a piece of cake doesn’t it?  And though you may think, “oh well traffic survival school should at least be easy”; think again.  This is not your typical traffic school that you would have done before getting your license the first time.  No, this is much more intense.

If/when you get a DUI traffic survival school is a mandatory step that you must complete in your list of requirements to regain your driver’s license.  But what does that mean?  Is it like regular traffic school where I can just take it online and breeze right through it?  Good question – NO.  Traffic survival school is pretty much traffic school on steroids.  You’re going to be listening to and talking about similar topics but more in depths and more specialized to the purposes you are there for – aka getting a DUI.

You are required to do this.  So don’t think that you can just skip over it, move straight to go and collect $200 – Monopoly is not real life.  You go for one day, though you can split it into two if you want.  It is 8 mandatory hours long, again you can split it 4 and 4 if preferred.  The cost can run anywhere between $100-170 – you can pay online or bring a cashier’s check with you the day of.  If you do not pay online and you just go to the class and don’t bring the check, to bad so sad you’ll have to come back later.

Due to the severity of getting a DUI this class is going to be equally as severe in terms of its policies and expectations.  Don’t think you can get all buddy, buddy with the instructor and get special privileges.  You won’t be getting out early for good behavior.  You can’t sleep your way through or sit and play candy crush on your phone hidden under the desk.  This is serious stuff.

Yes, mistakes happen, sure you may not have meant to drink and drive, that’s ok – you are forgiven.  But that does not make the consequences any different.  You need to learn how not to let this happen again.  Sometimes that’s all we need, a reminder of the privilege we have as drivers.  It’s only an eight-hour class, suck it up, learn what you can from it, get it done, and move forward with the process.

Remember that we, as a free service, are here for you.  We will not judge you, we will not make you feel like you are this horrible person who deserves to be shunned.  We know that this is not true.  You are simply a person who made a mistake and now you are fixing it and trying to do better – that’s fantastic and we are proud of you.  We will be that person that you can call for support, a shoulder to place your worries on, and a guiding voice to set you on the right path to regaining your freedom.
